Other Birth Injuries

Cerebral palsy and Erb's palsy aren't the only birth injuries that can damage a newborn baby during childbirth. The process of childbirth can lead to unforeseen and unpredictable consequences for mother and child. While each birth injury is different, the most common non-cerebral or Erb's palsy birth injuries affect four areas of a newborn baby: the head, bones, brain, and nerves.

Infant Head Injuries

When a baby is born, his or her skull is underdeveloped. Since most births are from a head-first position, the head is the first part of a child to emerge during childbirth and usually experiences the most pressure during childbirth. However, tender heads can be damaged by birth injuries such as fractured skull bones (these usually heal quickly unless an indentation is formed), cephalohematoma (pooled blood beneath the skull), jaundice, skull bruising, head swelling, and caput succedaneum (discolored, swollen, bleeding, or bruised scalp).

Infant Bone Injuries

Fractured bones are also common birth injuries. Though any bone can be subject to fracture due to birth pressure, the collarbone is the most common bone fracture in newborn babies. Shoulder dystocia occurs when the shoulders cannot pass through the birth passage and are injured during birth. This can lead to injuries to the brachial plexus and break bones.

Infant Brain Injuries

Cerebral palsy is just one kind of brain injury that can occur during childbirth. But few people know that babies are almost as susceptible to strokes as elderly people. Perinatal stroke can cause lifelong struggles such as hyperactivity, language problems, epilepsy, and cognitive dysfunction.

Infant Nerve Injuries

A baby's delicate nerves are sometimes no match for a complicated birth. Trauma to the nervous system, including the cranial, facial, and other nerves can result. The aftereffects of nerve injury range from paralysis to problems blinking, making facial expressions, or performing simple tasks.
